Academic Program
For researchers and educators,
low-cost access to scientific information
A special online information
program for education
You may be eligible to search a variety of comprehensive
databases at a significant discount on STN, the Scientific
and Technical Information Network. Through a special
program of FIZ Karlsruhe, one of the three scientific
organizations that operate STN, qualifying educational
institutions can receive a 70% discount on searching
certain STN databases during specific hours.

Terms of the The STN Karlsruhe Academic Program is available to accredited educational institutions
offering four-year scientific or related technical degrees. The program may be used only
program
to provide service to the faculty, staff, and students of the subscribing institution for
educational purposes. It may not be used in the course of work provided for any
outside organization, or to provide any search-for-fee service.
The academic discount is applied to searches, displays, and offline prints only in the
databases offered under the STN Karlsruhe Academic Program. Telecommunication
charges are not discounted.
Two types of accounts are offered under the STN Karlsruhe Academic Program:
1) RESEARCH: The databases may be accessed only during the hours listed on the
STN Karlsruhe Academic Program Order Form and may be used only for academic
research.
2) EDUCATION: The databases may be accessed at any time during the STN hours
of operation; however, they must be used for the specific purpose of teaching online
searching.
There is a $80 fee to sign up for the STN Karlsruhe Academic Program. You may
establish a RESEARCH account, EDUCATION account, or both. Up to 10 login IDs
are permitted for each account.
In addition to your STN Karlsruhe Academic Program account(s), you may also have
a standard, unrestricted STN account. The fee to open a standard STN account is $80.
To sign up for the STN Karlsruhe Academic Program, you must complete an STN
Karlsruhe Academic Program Order Form and an STN International Agreement and
Order Form.

Terms and conditions:
1. Participant must have completed an STN International Agreement and Order Form in addition
to the STN Karlsruhe Academic Program Order Form for each account desired. The terms and
conditions of both forms apply.
2. Participant must be an accredited educational institution offering four-year scientific or related
technical degrees.
3. The 70% discount applies to the following STN Karlsruhe databases for RESEARCH and
EDUCATION accounts:

4. RESEARCH accounts may be used for any research related to educational requirements, but only
during the specified hours:
Eastern Time Zone: Monday through Friday 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Central Time Zone: Monday through Friday 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Mountain Time Zone: Monday through Friday 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Pacific Time Zone: Monday through Friday 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
In addition, participants in all time zones may use the STN Karlsruhe RESEARCH account on
Friday from 5:00 p.m. local time until Saturday at 10:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time and Sunday from
1:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time until Monday at 5:00 a.m. local time. On the first Saturday of each
month, STN is only available until 5:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.
EDUCATION accounts may be used any time during the STN hours of operation, but must be used
only for the specific purpose of teaching online searching.
5. The STN Karlsruhe Academic Program is offered to, and must be paid by, the university or college.
It cannot be used to provide information for privately funded research, or to provide services
to anyone other than faculty, staff, and students.
6. Up to 10 login IDs are available for each STN Karlsruhe Academic Program account.
7. Terms and conditions are subject to change without notice.
8. Usage will be invoiced monthly. Payment must be made within 30 days of the date of the invoice
to avoid a 1.5% per month finance charge.
