On Saturday, June 21, 2008, the Oakland Police Department conducted a city-wide sex
offender registrant enforcement operation titled "Operation Compliance Check 2008."
This operation involved 101 law enforcement personnel from several agencies, including
the Oakland Police Department, the California Department of Justice, State Parole,
Alameda County Probation, and the Alameda County Sexual Assault Felony
Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force. The results of this operation were as follows:
238 total compliance checks were conducted
83 registered sex offenders were determined to be "in compliance" (about 35%)
66* registered sex offenders were deemed to be "out of compliance" (about 28%)
(Warrants will be sought for their arrests)
84 addresses will have to be re-checked
4 arrests were made for registrant violations
8 arrests were made for non-registrant violations
This enforcement effort was made possible as a result of the Oakland Police Department
recently being awarded a grant through the Adam Walsh Act (AWA) which was signed
in 2006 by President George Bush. This grant afforded the Oakland Police Department
the funds necessary to enhance our efforts in ensuring convicted sex offenders were in
full compliance of their registration requirements as stipulated by State Law. As a result
of both the preparation and execution of this operation, we have determined that about
900 registered sex offenders (down from the original number of 1,215) actually live in
the City of Oakland.
The efforts of June 21, 2008 were merely the starting point for future compliance
enforcement operations and community awareness campaigns.
