LEVEL 3 DESIGNATED AS OWNER AND OPERATOR OF AS1
On June 4, 2004, Level 3 Communications was formally designated as the
official owner and operator of AS1 (Autonomous System One), the Internet's
first network number.
Autonomous System numbers are globally unique, numeric identifiers that
networks use to identify hosts and other networks connected to the Internet.
The numbering of IP networks dates to the early 1980s, when the need for a
formal system to organize such networks was first identified.
AS1 was originally assigned to Bolt, Beranek & Newman (BBN), a pioneering
company in the field of network packet technology. BBN engineers are credited
with developing the earliest routers, with sending the world's first e-mail and
with establishing the "@" convention used in all e-mail sent today. Through a
series of subsequent corporate transactions, ownership of AS1 passed to
Genuity, Inc., a communications company whose assets were acquired by Level
3 in February 2003.
In 1984, the year AS1 was granted to network developers at BBN, a total of 35 AS numbers had been assigned.
There are now more than 32,000 network AS addresses, enabling billions of individual communications every day.
As the world's first documented Autonomous System, AS1 holds substantial historic significance across the
communications industry. Level 3 is honored to operate AS1 and to carry on the spirit of innovation with which it
has long been associated.
