CA-CP Climate Fellowship Opening
Clean Air-Cool Planet (CA-CP) is inviting applications for the inaugural session of
our competitive Climate Fellowship program. CA-CP is an action-oriented nonprofit
that works with corporations, campuses, communities and science centers to find and
promote solutions to global warming. We provide practical solutions that demonstrate
the economic opportunities and environmental benefits of climate leadership.
CA-CP's Climate Fellowships pair outstanding students with challenging, important
projects that will propel the US toward a low-carbon future. CA-CP Climate Fellows
receive supervision and mentorship, unique networking opportunities, and a stipend.
The Project: Climate Change Backpack Coordination CT or NJ
The Climate Change Backpack is an educational tool designed by the Northeast Science
Center Collaborative, a program of Clean AirCool Planet. It provides a brief, down-to-
earth introduction to the science of climate change for middle and high school students.
The goal of the backpack is to help young people understand the concept of global
climate change both its foundation in science and its broader social and economic
implications. The Backpack is designed to help educators engage audiences in exploring
how climate change can affect real people where they live. Only a clearer understanding
of global warming and climatic disruption will enable others to identify and examine
appropriate responses to this timely and crucial issue.
The Northeast Science Center Collaborative is in the early stages of updating, editing,
and redesigning the Backpack's curriculum to reflect the most recent information from
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2007 report. In addition, as Clean Air
- Cool Planet expands its reach into the Mid-Atlantic States, we are creating a customized
version of the Backpack, with case studies and activities designed to resonate with
residents of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The selected CA-CP Climate
Fellow will work with the manager of the science center collaborative and science center
educators to update and edit the current curriculum and design case studies, activities,
and lessons for the customized Mid-Atlantic version. For more information on the
climate change backpack go to http://www.sciencecentercollaborative.org/backpack.php
Duties will include:
Evaluate current activities and props to determine what needs to be revised
and updated.
Assist with updating curriculum material and props.
Convene a working group of environmental educators to gather ideas,
lessons, and data for the Backpack's Mid-Atlantic version.
Assist with the development of case studies for the Mid-Atlantic version of
the backpack.
Assist with editing the final versions of all new materials developed.

Strong writing and organizational skills

CA-CP Climate Fellowship program eligibility:
Internships will be open only to those enrolled in a college or university. We require an
academic sponsor or reference for each intern, and where possible we will ask that course
credits be awarded. Depending on the placement, preference may be given to students
that are local to the project. In order to attract the highest-quality applicants and to
enable students to take advantage of these opportunities regardless of their financial
situation, interns will be awarded competitive stipends, provided by CA-CP.
Supervision, Training and Mentoring
Each fellow will receive supervision and mentoring from a CA-CP program officer with
day-to-day supervision by staff at the partner institution sponsoring the project. This
additional CA-CP mentor will provide informal feedback, address concerns, and in
general serve as a neutral sounding board.
Fellows in each session will be expected to participate in three events:
A half-day orientation session before beginning work;
A "climate leadership training" day during the program term, where interns will
have opportunity to talk with alumni of the program, experts and leaders in the
field of climate change science, policy and solutions, and CACP staff in both
formal and informal settings;
A summative evaluation and feedback session (conducted by a third party) at the
end of their placement.
These workshops and other post-fellowship communication mechanisms ensure that CA-
CP Climate Fellows will belong to a network of passionate students and professionals,
and will be able to collaborate and continue learning even after the project has ended.
Travel and Training Grants
Fellows will be encouraged to seek out training opportunities, lectures and conferences
related to their work. CA-CP has set aside a fund to which fellows may apply to pay for
travel to and from training or educational opportunities, registration fees and incidental
expenses. To be awarded a travel/training grant, you will need to carefully research the
opportunity and to make a compelling case, in a written application, as to why it would
enhance work with CA-CP. Available funds will be disbursed on a first-come, first-
served basis.
Applicants should submit an email titled "Campus Fellowship" indicating the
desired project (i.e., "Climate Change Backpack") in the body of the email, with
attached resume, list of references and writing samples to:
