Performance Initiatives Undertaken
The Unit conducts an internship program to assist members of the community in learning skills needed
for radio employment. Students are registered on a full-time basis at universities, colleges, community
colleges, and vocational colleges. Interns are taught the world of radio which provides valuable
experience to facilitate their efforts in seeking careers in broadcasting. Interns are often subsequently
hired to work on a free-lance basis, which can lead to further employment opportunities with the Unit.
The Unit participated in several job fairs during this period. They include Bowie State University,
American University, Howard University, and the University of Maryland. At these fairs the Unit
looked for interns and free-lance operations staff to fill openings for the Unit. The Unit was also
represented at the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation Radio Show Career Fair
in Las Vegas, April 2008.
The Unit hosted a luncheon for organizations represented in the UnitāTMs outreach list to discuss ways
for the Unit to meet the needs of the organizations to assist in their efforts to refer qualified applicants
for employment with the Unit. The group also discussed the internship program as a method of
obtaining training for individuals seeking employment in broadcasting.
Program Director of WFED made several appearances at various government agencies and met with
employees of those agencies to ascertain their needs on the kind of programming WFED could do to
meet the needs of employees.
Sexual Harrassment training was provided to management and staff on October 2, 3, and 4, 2007. This
training was facilitated by Bonneville's Vice President of Human Resource and was approximately 2.5
hours in length. Management was taught how to recognize and respond to complaints of sexual
harassment and discrimination.
