GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT
GRADUATE PROGRAM IN LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT
THE SCHOOL
The Graduate School of Engineering and Management of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is
organized into the academic departments of Aeronautics and Astronautics (ENY), Electrical and Computer
Engineering (ENG), Systems and Engineering Management (ENV), Engineering Physics (ENP),
Mathematics and Statistics (ENC), and Operational Sciences (ENS). Over 98% of the faculty members hold
doctoral degrees; approximately half are military officers. The School has historically ranked in the top 10%
of US schools in the number of advanced engineering degrees awarded each year.
THE DEGREE
The Commander, Air University, is authorized by Public Law 733 of the 83d Congress to confer degrees
upon persons who meet all requirements for those degrees as established by AFIT. The Institute is
accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools through the doctoral level. The
Intermediate Developmental Education Master of Logistics Management (ILM) program leads to the degree
of Master of Logistics Management.
THE PROGRAM
For DoD-sponsored full-time students, the ILM program requires 12 months (4 academic quarters) of
full-time study and begins in June of each year. Only those students selected for IDE in-residence may
participate in this program. The program is directed by the Department of Operational Sciences of the
Graduate School of Engineering and Management (AFIT/ENS), 2950 Hobson Way, Bldg 641, Wright-
Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7765 (DSN 785-2549, Commercial 937-255-2549).
CORE COURSES
The core courses required for the ILM program are: LOGM 617, LOGM 570, LOGM 590, LOGM 615,
LOGM 620, and ECON 520. These courses provide the student with a functional base from which they will
best understand the logistics field.
RESEARCH FOUNDATIONS COURSE(S)
ILM students will take LOGM 601 to fulfill a requirement to take a research fundamentals course in
preparation for their completion of their research project while at AFIT.
TOOLS COURSES
ILM students shall take four (4) tools classes to familiarize them with some of the various tools needed.
Those courses are: STAT 525, OPER 501, STAT 535, ORSC 542.
CAPSTONE COURSE
All ILM students shall take a capstone course in their final quarter to integrate all the material learned while
at AFIT. The ILM capstone course is LOGM 627.
ADMISSION CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES
The general requirements for admission to the ILM program in the Department of Operational Sciences
are:
1. A baccalaureate degree or equivalent.
2. A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
3. Graduate Records Examination (GRE) combined score of 1100 with a minimum of 500
(verbal) and 600 (quantitative), or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) score of
at least 550.
4. Mathematics through college algebra with a grade of C or higher.
5. Selected for IDE in-residence.
Waivers to the above requirements may be granted on an individual basis by the Department of
Operational Sciences. Admission procedures are specified in the AFIT home page
.
RESEARCH PAPER
All ILM students are required to complete a research paper under the direction of a faculty advisor. This
independent study requirement (OPER 791) provides an introduction to the research process, strengthens
the ILM student's writing skills, and augments the AFIT/ENS research program.
COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS
Courses may be substituted in the above curriculum with the approval of the ILM Program Director. A
listing of available courses is available in the department website,
http://en.afit.edu/ens/courses/default.asp
LOGISTICS ELECTIVES
Logistics Electives courses are to be chosen by the student from the AFIT Course Catalog.
EDUCATIONAL PLANS
All AFIT ILM students are required to complete an approved program of study. Individualized education
plans are completed with the assistance of a faculty advisor, normally prior to the completion of the first
quarter. Electives will be decided at this point, based on course availability and student interest.
