IDE PROGRAM IN OPERATIONS ANALYSIS
THE SCHOOL
The Graduate School of Engineering and Management of the Air Force Institute of Technology
(AFIT) is organized into the academic departments of Operational Sciences (ENS), Aeronautics
and Astronautics (ENY), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ENG), Engineering and
Environmental Management (ENV), Engineering Physics (ENP) and Mathematics and Statistics
(ENC). Over 98% of the faculty members hold doctoral degrees; approximately half are military
officers. The School has historically ranked in the top 10% of US schools in the number of
advanced engineering degrees awarded each year.
THE DEGREE
The Commander, Air University, is authorized by Public Law 733 of the 83d Congress to confer
degrees upon persons who meet all requirements for those degrees as established by AFIT. The
Institute is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools through the
doctoral level. The Intermediate Developmental Education Program in Operations Analysis (IOA)
program leads to the degree of "Master of Operations Analysis."
THE PROGRAM
The in-residence IOA program requires 12 months (4 academic quarters) of full-time study and
begins in May of each year. The program is directed by the Department of Operational Sciences of
the Graduate School of Engineering and Management (AFIT/ENS), 2950 Hobson Way, Bldg 641,
Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433-7765 (DSN 785-2549, Commercial 937-255-2549). The
purpose of the program is to educate qualified military members in the practice of operational
sciences, with emphasis on the application of quantitative analysis techniques to defense decision-
making. Specific topics of study include mathematical modeling, operational modeling,
simulation, statistical analysis, stochastic modeling and analysis, logistics and cost analysis. The
program is open to military and civilians selected for Intermediate Developmental Education
(IDE).
PROGRAM GRADUATES
Graduates will be well-prepared to fill a variety of key decision-making, and policy formulation
positions at the Pentagon, MAJCOM headquarters, AFMC product centers, operational units, and
other DoD agencies.
ADMISSION CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES
The educational prerequisite for admission to the IOA program is a baccalaureate degree in
engineering, science, mathematics, or other quantitative discipline. The minimum undergraduate
grade-point-average (GPA) is 3.00 out of 4.00 for all coursework. All applicants must have been
selected for in-residence IDE and have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); minimum
acceptable scores are for the GRE are 500 Verbal / 600 Quantitative. Waivers (to a maximum of
20% of the total enrolled) to these requirements can be requested through the AFIT Registrar.
Potential applicants may find application information at the AFIT web site, http://www.afit.edu.
CORE REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for the Master of Operations Analysis degree, all IOA students develop a foundation in
fundamental operations research methods and associated disciplines. This objective is
accomplished through the following program of study:
Hrs
Mathematics (MATH 509) 4
Statistics (STAT 526, STAT 536, STAT 696) 12
Deterministic Modeling (OPER 503) 3
Probabilistic Modeling (OPER 504) 3
Simulation (OPER 561) 4
Modeling and Analysis (OPER 596, OPER 677) 6
Cost Analysis (OPER 632) 3
Decision & Risk Analysis (OPER 646) 4
Graduate Research Project (OPER 791) 6
Elective 3
In addition to the core, all students must take OPER 497 (Graduate Research Project Methods and
Seminar) for guidance in the preparation of a research proposal.
COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS
Courses may be substituted in the above curriculum with the approval of the Head of the
Department of Operational Sciences. A listing of available courses can be found in the AFIT
course catalog or at the website http://www.afit.edu.
INDEPENDENT STUDY REQUIREMENT (Graduate Research Project)
All IOA students complete a Graduate Research Project (GRP) under the direction of a faculty
advisor. This independent study requirement (OPER 791) provides an introduction to the research
process, strengthens the IOA student's writing skills and augments the AFIT/ENS research
program. Detailed information on GRP objectives, requirements, and evaluation is available in the
ENS document, Policy on Graduate Research Papers, available upon request. Students present
their completed research results to interested faculty and students in an informal briefing, usually
during week 9 or 10 of the fourth quarter. The OPER 497 course, taken for undergraduate credit, is
conducted during the third quarter and prepares the student for GRP research. The first five weeks
of the course takes place in the classroom and focuses on research methodology and policies. The
student then teams with a faculty advisor for the remainder of the course, focusing on the
preparation of a research proposal that is approved by the faculty research advisor.
EDUCATIONAL PLANS
All AFIT students are required to complete an approved program of study. The elements of the
IOA program are summarized above and a typical course schedule is provided below.
Individualized education plans are completed with the assistance of a faculty academic advisor.
All full-time students are expected to carry an average course load of at least 12 credit hours per
quarter. Hence, students enrolled in a four-quarter program should accumulate at least 48 credit
hours (excluding short term courses).
