JOURNALS ACQUISITIONS EDITOR
Maney Publishing wishes to appoint an experienced and
versatile editor to acquire materials science and engineering
titles journals in North America and Europe.
Maney now publishes almost eighty journals under its own imprint, in addition to
providing journal and book publishing services for academic and professional
organisations. We have grown very rapidly over the last five years, and have
increased our turnover significantly as a result of successful bids, in the face of stiff
opposition, for society journals and by outright purchases. The Company now
wishes to appoint someone with knowledge, experience, acumen, and energy to
acquire further society journals in North America and Europe, and to identify
privately owned assets that Maney might buy.
Since 2001 Maney has been the publisher to the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and
Mining, to whose 15 journals we have added further complementary titles. Maney
has become a recognised publisher in this field and our list receives sales and
marketing exposure at international conferences worldwide. In 2007 we established
our subsidiary, Maney Publishing (USA) Inc. and employed an Executive Publisher
in the USA as a further step towards developing our list in America.
The successful candidate will report to Mark Simon, Maney's Publishing Director
who is based in our London office.
Role
The role of the Acquisitions Editor is to develop Maney's journal list through:
a. successful bids for society journals, and
b. the acquisition of the copyright of journals that may be offered for sale.
Tasks

will be responsible for:
1. Systematically researching subjects appropriate to Maney's publishing
strengths in materials science and engineering in order to identify societies
that wish to change publishing arrangements, or whose contracts with an
existing publisher are coming up for renewal. Correspondence, personal
contacts and meetings should lead to invitations to submit publishing
proposals.
2. Making contact with key society officers, journal editors and editorial board
members with a view to establishing relations that will lead to publishing
collaborations;
3. Contributing to our database of contacts and journals that are identified,
together with any information about current contracts that might be relevant
for future bids;
4. Preparing and submitting publishing proposals and tender documents that
will incorporate the financial, marketing, production quality and
collaborative advantages that a publishing contract with Maney offers;
5. Presenting an oral summary of the tender document to senior members of
societies, and preparing any further documentation that might be required to
establish the contractual agreement.
6. Ensuring that all the relevant information and procedures are followed in
order to ensure that new journals are integrated efficiently into the Maney
Publishing system.
7. Developing a comprehensive knowledge of the publishing market and the
companies involved with a view to making appropriate acquisitions for
Maney.
8. Preparing a business plan for journal purchases so that the Board of the
Company can consider the merits of the purchase.
9. Liaising with other departments of the company to ensure that feedback is
provided after meetings with contacts. Reports and other information should
be shared on a regular basis.
Experience and abilities
