· Provides leadership for a national program in diseases of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and blood, blood resources, and sleep disorders;
· Plans, conducts, fosters, and supports an integrated and coordinated program of basic research, clinical investigations and trials, observational studies, and demonstration and education projects
relating to the causes, prevention, methods of diagnosis, and treatment (including emergency medical treatment) of the heart, blood vessel, lung, blood diseases, and sleep disorders through
research performed in its own laboratories and through contracts and research grants to scientific institutions and to individuals;
· Plans and directs research in the development, trial, and evaluation of drugs and devices relating to the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from such diseases and
disorders;
· Conducts studies and research into the clinical use of blood and all aspects of the management of its resources;
· Supports training and career development of personnel in fundamental sciences and clinical disciplines for participation in basic and clinical research programs relating to heart, blood vessels,
blood, lung diseases, blood resources, and sleep disorders; by individual and institutional research training awards;
· Coordinates with the other research institutes and with all Federal health programs relevant activities in the above diseases and disorders, including the related causes of stroke;
· Conducts educational activities, including the collection and dissemination of educational materials on these diseases and disorders, with emphasis on the prevention thereof, for health
professionals and the lay public; and
· Maintains continuing relationships with institutions and professional associations and with international, national, state, and local officials, and voluntary agencies and organizations working in
these areas.
