National Institute of Design An Introduction
The National Institute of Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost
multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education, applied research, training,
design consultancy services and outreach programmes. NID is a Society registered
under the Societies Registration Act,1860 (21 of 1860) and also registered under the
Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1960 (29 of 1960) and established in 1961 as an autonomous
institution under the Ministry of Industry (now known as the Ministry of Commerce &
Industry). NID is a grant-in-aid autonomous institution under the aegis of the Department
of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.
NID has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by the
Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology,
Government of India.

Main Activities / functions / services of the Institute
A. NID's Professional Education Programme
The Professional Education Programme of NID operates through four main faculty
streams and a common interdisciplinary stream for undergraduate, postgraduate and
research programmes :
- The Industrial Design Faculty
- The Communication Design Faculty
- The Textile & Apparel Design Faculty
- The Exhibition Design Faculty
- The Inter-disciplinary Design Studies Faculty
The Professional Education Programme offers both UG and PG programmes. The UG
programme is of four years duration leading to Undergraduate Diploma in Design. The
PG programme is for graduates of Architecture / Engineering / Fine Arts / Applied Arts
with a duration of two and half years leading to PG Diploma in Design.
Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)
The 4-year intensive professional UG programme is offered in the following three faculty
streams (possible areas of design specialization through projects are given in brackets):
Industrial Design (Product Design, Furniture & Interior Design, Ceramic & Glass
Design)
Communication Design (Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film & Video
Communication, Exhibition Design)
Textile & Apparel Design (Textile Design)
Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (PGDPD)
This 2 to 2 ½ year programme is offered in the specific areas of specialization (indicated
in brackets) in 15 design disciplines under the 5 faculty streams as under:

Design, Toy Design & Development, Transportation & Automobile Design
Textile, Apparel & Accessory Design (Textile Design, Apparel Design &
Merchandising, Lifestyle Accessory Design)
Communication Design (Graphic Design, Animation Film Design,Film & Video
Communication )
IT Integrated Design (New Media Design, Software & User Interface Design,
Information & Digital Design)
Inter-Disciplinary Design Studies (Strategic Design Management)
B. Integrated Design Services (IDS)
IDS comprises of Outreach Programmes, Industry Programmes & Projects.
Outreach Programmes :
Outreach Programmes make the Institute's resources and competencies reach out to
other organizations / institutions to spread the power of design and partnershipping in
design innovations and design practices and play an important role in the overall
development of craft / handloom / cottage industry sectors thereby contributing
significantly to the economic development and growth of craftsmen and other weaker
sections of the community.
Industry Programmes & Projects :
Industry Programmes & Projects (IP&P) are undertaken to meet specific requirements of
industry for design awareness and intervention. Short-term training programmes,
workshops, seminars and design-clinics for product development are conducted by NID
both in the campus and off-campus through its satellite center in Hyderabad
Design Consultancy Services :
NID's Design Consultancy services serves the design needs of various industry and
public sector organizations through design intervention by way of client projects.
Assignments in industrial design, communication design, textile and apparel design,
exhibition design including multi-disciplinary projects are carefully selected to provide
professional situations which serve to train young student designers as well as develop
the faculty through practical exposure. Earnings from client projects form part of NID's
Non-Plan expenditure budget.
Research & Publications :
In the context of the emerging need for strengthening of educational activities at NID,
Applied research and publication activities assume great significance to enhance the
educational system. The Research & Publication activity covers all applied research
activities of NID to draw from and contribute to educational programmes and integrated
design services of the Institute. The Publication Wing cater to the needs of Faculty
members by actually helping in manuscripting the concepts, ideas, case studies,
teaching materials, etc.
Details of Powers and Duties of Officers and Employees of the organization
The affairs of NID as a registered society are administered, directed and controlled by a
Governing Council in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Society.
The Chairman of the Governing Council is nominated by the Government of India
amongst the members of the Council who hold the office for such time as may be

The meetings of Governing Council are not open to the public or the minutes of such
meetings are accessible to the public.
The Director of NID is the Principal Executive Officer of the Society. He is appointed by
the Governing Council and the term of his office and other conditions of his service shall
be determined by the Governing Council.
The Director prescribes on behalf of the Council the duties of all officers and staff of the
society and exercises such supervision and disciplinary control as may be necessary in
accordance with the rules. The Director is responsible for the day to day management of
the affairs of the society and exercises his powers under the direction, superintendence
and control of the Governing Council.
