Lit Fuse films presents the Ballad of Black Mesa. Ballad is an experiment in sound design that attempts to create a solid
musical track using only in-game assets. Filmed in Half Life 2 this techno-stomp hybrid keeps your toes tapping to the
beat while a band silhouettes keep your eyes engaged. Ballad has seen more than its share of recognition, appearing in
GEE magazine in Germany, and PC gamer magazine in the UK. The film also won third place in this year's Bitfilm
awards. The film was created by Zachariah Scott and Ben Hundley in the spring of 2007, and makes full use of the
popular source game "Garry's Mod" and is one of the most prestigious works Lit Fuse films has had the honour of
producing.

Synopsis
This short machinima plays out much like a music video and tells the tale of one man's escapism and search for a 'better
place' within a virtual world. Shot entirely within the Second Life platform the only post-production process the producer
has used is the cross-fading of scenes. Each prop, particle-effect, script and character animation was custom built for
this project by the producer.
The Song (Better Life) has been used with kind permission from my friends Scott Bingham, Steve Bean and Mark
Randall (AKA. Angry Man). The work will now be forever dedicated to Mark Randall, who sadly lost his life to cancer on
the 17th February 2007. Mark was 34.

Blink (Ep1): Look at the light in your room or the sun outside. Close your eyes, listen. Within a blink are lights, music,
silhouettes and spaces in the dark. Three installations across two rooms and an island explore the richness of seeing
and hearing in a virtual world.
Garden Electric (Ep2): glowing organics of the underwater world have a life of their own. The art and soundtrack, inspired
by the shapes and motion of the watery world, blend an alien twist of the electric light, organic-geometric hybrid and sci-fi
sounds one encounters.
What the Heck Happened to Blink (A closing event) (Ep3): a concert, a video, and wearable art donned by viewers; then,
in the `blinjk' of an eye the art and even the very island itself suddenly disappears. Avatars find themselves floating,
surprised in darkness, over an empty ocean with only the sounds of wind and waves.

Synopsis
Chapter 11 of BloodSpell, Strange Company's groundbreaking punk fantasy series: some people are infected with magic
in their blood. When their blood is spilled, the magic is released, to harm or heal. The Black Monks of the Church of the
Angels hunt these "Blooded" like animals, bringing them to their Angelic master to be "cleansed".
Jered, a trainee with the Black Monks, was forced to flee for his life when he revealed that he had magic in his blood.
Now, he is returning to the Fortress of the Angels to rescue Arianne, a Blooded woman who saved his life. With him are
Carrie, a young Blooded girl, and Gad, a Blooded gladiator whose magical arm was taken from him by the Church. Jered
has a plan to steal the Arm back from the Church, but he doesn't know all the forces moving in the background...
In Chapter 13 of BloodSpell, Jered was forced to flee for his life when he revealed that he had magic in his blood. He
returned to the Fortress of the Church to rescue a friend, but found himself walking into a trap. Now, he's been rescued
by the cleverness of Carrie, his companion, a young Blooded girl. But in rescuing Jered, Carrie has awoken things that
would have been better left sleeping. And Jered himself isn't out of danger, fleeing for his life in the middle of the
Church's stronghold...
In Chapter 14, the final part of BloodSpell, the Master of the Church had other plans for Jered he has covered up
Jered's revelation, lured Jered back to the Fortress of the Church, and finally compelled him to agree to rejoin the Black
Monks by threatening his new Blooded companions. But not even the Master can completely control the magic, or his
own world...

Synopsis
This video was the year-end project for the Global Kids youth leaders in Queens, New York, who spent the year working
in Global Kids' after-school Virtual Video Project, at the Museum of the Moving Image, New York. The movie is based
around Anthony's experience as a child soldier. The Lord's Resistant Army (LRA) kidnapped him when he was young,
and this is his story reported in the Netherlands. In the midst of battle, he recognized his brother in the opposing army.
As a result, his brother sacrificed himself and placed his gun down. In the end, Unicef saved Anthony and hence he was
able to share his story with the public.
The video is based on research undertaken by the youth leaders about the situation of child soldiers in Uganda and the
upcoming trial and the International Criminal Court.

Synopsis
Comcast is is the largest cable company and the second largest Internet service provider in the United States. Their
entry into the Second Life metaverse was through the creation of 'Comcast Island', a leisure resort and fun fair. All the
rides on the island have an underlying theme of 'speed' at their core, echoing their real world drive towards high speed
data services. We wanted to avoid the cliche of a high-speed presentation and so took a leisurely look at the facilities on
offer in our film which had the working title 'Ciena's Day Out' in which we follow the adventures of a visitor to the island.
The production was used first internally to introduce senior executives to Comcast's Second Life presence, and
subsequently to publicise their virtual island to the general public.

MtvU sent out a casting call not long ago asking for college students to submit machinima samples. The producer
responded and they contacted asking him to make four thirty-second commercials for their brand new section called
"gam0RZ ball" that would run during their broadcast of Gamer's Week 2.0. He was under time constraints, and had to
include campaign plugs and commissioner plugs, and re-write scripts provided so that they were funny. This was made
for mtvU and aired on mtvU in November of 2006.

Synopsis
Did that break your concentration was created in June 2007, with the pre-open beta version of Moviestorm. It was
directed by Michelle Pettit-Mee and its soundtrack was created by Paul Weir.
This mini crime caper was the first commercial created in, and for Moviestorm and represents Moviestorm's homage to
the movie "Pulp Fiction". Well known for its rich, eclectic dialogue, ironic mix of humour and violence, as well as a host of
cinematic and other pop culture references. It is a movie who's self-reflexivity, unconventional structure, and extensive
use of homage and pastiche has led critics to describe it as a prime example of postmodern film.
It is seen as inspiring many movies that adopted various elements of its style. A cultural watershed, its influence has
been felt in several popular mediums, which now include machinima and Moviestorm.

Domestic Violence is a short documentary-style Machinima developed as part of a workshop led by Ricard Gras that
took place at Leicester's Sir Jonathan North Community College in 2005 and that was produced thanks to the permission
of Electronic Arts. This short was developed with The SIMS2. The characters were designed by the workshop
participants and the virtual cameras were also operated by students. The short shows the struggle of a young woman
while she is at home with her husband and offers viewers information as to how to go about obtaining support and advice
if they happen to suffer any form of domestic violence. This piece has been shown in events and festivals worldwide.

Synopsis
Duel is a videoclip that was made in 1.5 hours as part of BAF's Machinima workshop at the UK's National Museum of
Media in collaboration with Linden Lab's Eric Call. The idea was to investigate the use of Second Life to explore
collaborative performance using online game servers. In this project approximately 14 students were invited to join a
virtual movie set and then puppeteer their avatars in order to develop the piece. All content was developed online, inside
Second Life. The production team alternated the roles of actors/cameras depending on the situation. Both the
storyboarding and the narrative were created in real-time. This process, although challenging, allowed us to explore
improvisational techniques and investigate new ways of capturing and developing Machinima as well as explore how to
integrate audiences in the collaborative creation of artistic work via the use of virtual spaces.

Synopsis
Malta, part of the British Commonwealth, is actually a small group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea, about half way
between Sicily and the northern coast of Africa. On June 12, 1940, the day after Italy declared war on Britain, the Italians
began a prolonged campaign of aerial bombardments against Malta.
This film highlights the early phase of that conflict as it follows the lives of three RAF pilots: George Burges, John Waters
and Timber Woods. These pilots flew Gloster Sea Gladiator biplanes in the heroic defence of the island against more
modern Italian fighters and bombers. In all, about six Gladiators were involved in the fighting--some were cannibalized for
parts--but only three could ever be scrambled for a single sortie. The legend that arose from that conflict, immortalized
three of the Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity.

Synopsis
This film was originally made as educational material for a class of students studying English as a Foreign Language in
th
Japan and was timed to commemorate the 70 year since the disaster a topic which had already been covered in their
history class. As it was successful in the classroom I decided to add it to my blog as a podcast so the producer could
reach a wider audience of students. He then decided to make the film as a docu-drama in order to combine both
elements of historical fact and human interest in the story, which also went well with the language component being
taught at the time.
In the making of the film itself, the producer created some characters and sets in the Sims 2 and later combined these
with historical video of the Hindenburg crash obtained from the Prelinger Archives on the internet.

Kung-Fu Glitch was recorded on VHS by Entter and Goto80 in July 2007 with a Commodore64. Kung-Fu Master(1984)
was an arcade game developed by Irem Corporation in Japan, later ported to the C64. We have modified this game and
mixed it with our C64-music that's re-arranged and modified live.
With the Retro Replay cartridge for C64 we gain full access to the RAM of the C64 to manipulate the game's graphics
and functionality. The blue screen that appears at some points is the interface of the cartridge and the lists of letters and
numbers is the data in the RAM. By simply changing this data, you modify the game. This technique was also used for
the music. The music was composed on C64 with JCH_Editor3.04(1991). We re-arranged two songs live in JCH Editor
and also manipulated the RAM to gain interesting sounds normally outside the range of the music software.

Machinima Island is a project where we invited audiences to develop, collectively, a story based on a number of
characters living in a set scenario. For that purpose we created a virtual movie set inside Second Life (Machinima Island)
and then a series of characters that we designed purposely for the series. Once all this was in place we then invited
people to throw ideas to us via a website (www.machinima-island.com) and then created a group inside Second Life
(Machinimators) so that we could develop the work online and in response to the input given by the audience. In order to
for us to react quickly to this input we developed a series of face and body animations that we were able to puppeteer in
real time using computer keyboards. All team members were based remotely so we used Machinima Island as a
prototyping space.

Synopsis
`Mum's Gone to Iceland' was a well-known advertising slogan for a UK chain of frozen food stores, the first to sell online
groceries nationwide in Britain. A conventional supermarket bombards visitors with advertising and colourful packaging.
This early virtual store consisted of a black and white text-list of items for sale, with simple weights and measures as a
guide.
The animations represent the producer's personal transition, as she moved from the trolley sprint style of weekly shop to
the cyberspace version, wondering how big is a 500g bag of frozen cauliflower.
Brand awareness, remembered images and strange associations mingle...space distorts. There is no distance from aisle
to aisle, or from home to shop. In this world of black and white, colour is supplied by the imagination.
Die Drei Lenore's music was chosen for their radical reworking of the type of catchy jingle that come to mind in
association with branded goods.

Synopsis
Pictures of War 2 (POW2) is the sequel to Pictures of War (POW) which was nominated for Best Editor in the 2005
Machinima Film Festival in New York and recently awarded the VGI Machinima Quality Certificate.
POW ends with the return of two out of the flight of three Corsairs stranded as they see that their Flagship Aircraft Carrier
has been attacked by the Japanese Air force and is sinking.
POW2 continues were POW ends although it is not essential to watch POW in order to grasp the story. POW2 follows
the story of one of the Corsair pilots Charles Taylor, whom eventually becomes the Flight Instructor of the famous Flight
19 that disappeared without trace in December 1945, although the movie continues to the year 1969.
This movie is the producer's version of events and delves into the question of "are we alone in the universe"

Synopsis
A solitary spacecraft makes a landing on a seemingly barren asteroid. The traveller is himself a machine, a private
investigator. He pries open an old hatchway to go below. Under the ice, tunnels descend deeper and deeper into the
dark. It's a refuelling station, a halfway point for missions to the outer reaches of the solar system. It was, until they shut
it down. What happened here? Pi, (the investigator) finds an inactive robot. He revives her. This is Kieru, the facility
manager. Why did the company take so long to send an investigator? It takes a bit of work to get it out of him but Pi
admits there's trouble in other facilities.
Pi is investigating the disappearance of thousands of dollars in company property and the mysterious demise of one of
the workers who goes by the name of Faraday. What is the project Kieru is so desperate to conceal? And what really
happened to Faraday? Pi investigates this eccentric crew who cut out an existence for themselves in the rocks and ice of
the asteroid, always under the shadow of the Company.

Synopsis
Waterlogged is a series about a man who gets caught in the worst weather ever to hit San Andreas. In the first episode
the floods hit Los Santos and after trying his best to survive, he gets caught in the water but fortunately, a helicopter
rescues him at the last minute. A year later, now in San Ferrio he comes home one day to find reports on the TV saying
that more bad weather is heading his way. He tries to escape the city but is not allowed to because the bridge is closed
down due to the weather. Not wanting to be caught up in the weather again, he shoots his way through the roadblocks
and police, crosses the bridge and gets into Las Venturas. Now living in Las Venturas, he wanders around a free but
wanted man, but he doesn't stay a free man for long...

Synopsis
When the Postman Spits Twice had a commercial purpose for Deutsche Post, which just entered Second Life. The
machinima shows on a fun side how manifold Second Life is and how this can be connected to the Deutsche Post. It
shows a typical postman and dog situation: the postman on his way to deliver his letter when suddenly a dog barks
angrily. But in contrast to the expected scene, the postman flies in the air and transforms with a pop into a werewolf. Of
course, the dog is shocked and runs away and the postman can finish his job. The movie wanted to communicate the
entering of the Deutsche Post and the New possibilities which occurred for that company.

Synopsis
You Hypocrite You is a music video produced for the Atlanta, Georgia (USA) based band "What the...?" in early 2007 by
veteran videographer Charles Lawrence, known in Second Life as Geuis Dassin. The video was created entirely in
Second Life in a virtual recreation of the famous club in Liverpool, England called The Cavern. To achieve cinematic
camera moves that are otherwise impossible in Second Life, the in-world camera system called Filming Path was
employed during filming. Video capture was performed with FRAPS, and post production was performed in Adobe
Premiere Pro. The band re-recorded their song specially for this music video. Following the Second Life video, we
appended a live recording of the band performing at The Cavern in Liverpool.

Synopsis
Oxhorn, Staghorn and Mortuus are a little disappointed that their invented swear words haven't caught on, and so they
travel into the depths of the Un'Goro Crater to find the Master of Euphemisms. They run into a number of challenges,
such as Staghorn's level, but eventually find their way to the Master of Euphemism's cave. To their horror, they discover
that the cave is guarded by the most horrendous beast imaginable, and are scared nearly out of their wits. In the end,
they find the Master of Euphemisms, obtain some valuable advice, and go on with their day. It is then that Oxhorn and
Staghorn discover Mortuus' plans to propose to his ugly girlfriend, Lacy, and they do what they can to stop him. Realizing
that they might lose a friend if they don't warm to Lacy, Oxhorn, Staghorn and the singing turtle named Hat end up
helping Mortuus propose.

Synopsis
Heralded as the largest vote in human history (100 million votes), the search for the "New Seven Wonders of the World"
was dramatic, controvertial and well documented in the worlds media both on and offline, everywhere from National
Geographic to Wikipedia. As part of their profile raising bid, the Mexican site of Chichen Itza was recreated inside
Second Life.
On the Yucatán Peninsula, Chichen Itza is the centre of the lost world of the Mayan civilisation. In production, Planet
Video sought to weave together a journey through the landscape, and through the time, showing Mayan ritual practice,
and the use of drugs and dream time visions. Through mathematical modeling, we were able to include the pivotal
moment of the Mayan calendar; the shadow cast at the equinox on the north steps of the pyramid in the shape of a
plumed serpent Quetzalcoatl.
The Chichen Itza bid was successful.

Synopsis
A reporter is trying to film a documentary on the life of Jean-Pierre FireSilverStorm, a minor paladin in the service of
Emperor Uriel Septim. The Journalist follows the monotonous daily life of the knight, from wild boar hunt to military
training, in portrait film fashion. Though the political situation in the kingdom seems to be peaceful and prosperous, as he
films, the journalist discovers bit by bit that a powerful evil sorcerer is secretly raising an army to overthrow the emperor
and invade Oblivion. Coincidentally, the elders select Jean-Pierre to investigate this new threat. Despite themselves and
with all the cards against them, our two protagonists will find themselves caught up in events beyond their control and
embark on adventures as exciting as they are dangerous.
