Oakhurst Dairy Picked for
2007 Climate Champion Award
Presentation at Global Warming and Energy Solutions Conference
Manchester, NH (October 12, 2007) Oakhurst Dairy, headquartered in Portland, Maine, has
received the 2007 award for corporate leadership on climate action from Clean Air - Cool Planet,
the leading nonprofit working to find and promote solutions to global warming in the Northeast.
Oakhurst was selected for the award because the company "exemplifies the institutional
commitment to reducing heat-trapping gases and solving the climate change problem that we
would like all corporations to emulate," according to Adam Markham, executive director of
Clean Air - Cool Planet (CA-CP).
Presenting the award at CA-CP's Global Warming and Energy Solutions conference, Susan
Tierney, board chair for the group, notes some of Oakhurst's accomplishments, including:
· Emissions inventory in partnership with CA-CP & NESCAUM
· Hybrid vehicle
· One of the first corporations to endorse Maine's carbon challenge campaign
· Biodiesel commitment
· Voluntary participation in carbon supply chain analysis with Wal-Mart
· Commitment to build solar hot water to cut energy consumption at plant
"It is unusual to see this level of commitment from a small privately-held, family-run firm.
Oakhurst Dairy has shown that it's possible for even small businesses to make hugely significant
leaps in combating global warming," Tierney said. "Clearly, Oakhurst Dairy is leading by
example."
"We're honored to be recognized by Clean Air-Cool Planet for an environmental position that is
so much a part of the Oakhurst belief system and company mission," said John Bennett, Vice
President of Sales for Oakhurst, upon accepting the award. "At Oakhurst, we hope to set an
example of how business can be an active partner in helping find solutions to climate change."
"We have been honored to count Oakhurst Dairy among our more active partners," said Bob
Sheppard, head of CA-CP's corporate programs after the award ceremony. "They have taken
many innovative steps to reduce green house gas emissions, and we appreciate the leadership
they have demonstrated that is so essential for real progress, because of the example they've set
for others."
The Climate Champion awards are presented every two years at Clean Air - Cool Planet's
climate solutions conference. Past winners among corporate climate leaders include Bank of
America, Shaw's Supermarkets, and the Timberland Company.
Office-product retailer Staples also won the CA-CP corporate honor this year.
