Working with industry executives to identify business needs and improve performance through market
research, thought leadership, and development of strategic initiatives is job one for Harvey M. Bernstein.

As vice president of industry analytics, alliances, and strategic initiatives with McGraw-Hill Construction,
Harvey divides his time between MHC's offices in Washington, DC--where he oversees industry and
government alliances--and Bedford, Mass. In Bedford he manages the company's Research and
Analytics division, which develops and maintains the company's construction industry statistics, building
stock information, and related databases.

Harvey has been a key player in MHC's green building initiatives, including the first-ever landmark
studies on green residential, commercial, education, and health care construction trends. He was
also instrumental in the launch of MHC's GreenSource magazine.

Earlier this year Harvey received McGraw-Hill's Excellence in Leadership Award, given in recognition of
the vision and determination he has displayed to grow the business while inspiring those around him to
do the same.

Moving Innovation Into Practice
Prior to joining MHC, Harvey was president and chief executive officer of the Civil Engineering Research
Foundation and the International Institute for Energy Conservation, the research arms of the 133,000-
member American Society of Civil Engineers. In this role he was responsible for building sustainable
homes in South Africa, and he managed offices in China, India, Thailand, South Africa, Philippines, and
the United Kingdom. A recognized expert in moving innovation into practice, while at CERF Harvey
created Innovative Technology Evaluation Centers to help entrepreneurs introduce innovation into
practice in the transportation, building, public works, and energy and environmental sectors.

An Advisor With Broad Reach
Harvey was appointed by former Secretary of State Colin Powell to serve on the U.S. State Department's
Advisory Committee on Leadership and Management, and he also served as a member of that
Department's Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations Industry Advisory Panel.

He also serves on the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Partnership to Advance
Technology in Housing (PATH) Industry Committee. He is a member of the Charles Pankow Foundation's
Advisory Council; Princeton University Civil & Environmental Engineering Advisory Council; the Harvard
Joint Center for Housing Policy Advisory Board; and is a visiting Professor with the University of Reading's
School of Construction Management and Engineering in Reading, England, where he also serves on the
School's Innovative Construction Research Center Advisory Board. In addition, Harvey was a Member on
the Canadian government's National Research Council's Construction Technologies Advisory Board.

Authoritative Writer and Speaker
Harvey has written monographs on Key Industry Trends and Measuring Productivity for the design and
construction community, and he created the MHC Green Building SmartMarket Report series on the
impact of green design and construction on the industry.

He has spoken and written extensively on innovation, residential and commercial construction, energy
efficiency, energy conservation, and sustainability in the built environment. He also co-authored the book
Solving the Innovation Puzzle: Challenges Facing the Design and Construction Industry (ASCE Press).

Harvey is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers; a member of the National Association of
Home Builders; and an associate member of the American Institute of Architects. He also represents
MHC on the U.S. Green Building Council.
