Process for Awarding Conference Scholarships
Each year, the Section of Dispute Resolution offers scholarships to our Annual Spring
Conference to help defray the cost to participants. The Section strongly encourages legal
services, public interest, community or government agency personnel, attorney solo
practitioners and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups to apply.
The Section will give priority to applicants with a total income of less than $65,000 a year
who work in an underserved setting (as outlined above). Should there be more qualified
applicants than available scholarships, the available scholarships will be awarded to
applicants based on the order in which their applications were received.
The ABA Section of Dispute Resolution and additional donors, (see the onsite conference
book for a full list of scholarship donors,) offer two types of scholarships and a volunteer
opportunity to help participants defray the conference registration cost.
Full Scholarship: The scholarship includes the early bird registration fee for the 10th Annual
ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Conference, Pacific Currents. The scholarship does not
cover travel costs, logging, Section membership or ticketed events. Priority will be given to
those outside of the Seattle area for full scholarships.
Volunteer Opportunity: The Pacific Currents conference is being presented in partnership
with the Northwest Dispute Resolution Conference. Up to 24 volunteers will receive free
admission to the conference (excluding ticketed events), and in exchange will be expected to
commit to serving at least two days of the conference--April 3-5, 2008. Organizers will
make every effort to take preferences into account when assigning volunteers to monitor
specific conference sessions, so that volunteers can attend sessions they are most interested
in. Priority will be given to previous attendees of the Northwest Dispute Resolution
Conference in selection of volunteers. A mandatory one-hour volunteer orientation will be
held on the afternoon of Wed. April 2nd, at the Sheraton Hotel.
Partial Scholarship: The Section will also award a limited amount of partial scholarships to
previous attendees of the Northwest DR Conference to cover the difference between the
registration fee for that conference and ABA-DR Section Member Early Bird registration fee.
The scholarship amount of $200 will be towards your early bird registration. Priority for
partial scholarships will be given to those applicants who applied to volunteer for the
conference but were not selected as volunteers.
Applications for scholarships to the Section Spring Conference will be reviewed by the
Scholarship Committee prior to the Conference. The review will include all scholarship
applications received by February 4, 2008. Applicants will be notified by email no later
than February 14, 2008, one week before the early-bird registration date of February 22,
2008. We are unable to offer scholarships to applicants who have already registered for this
conference. Incomplete application forms will be returned to you and will not be considered
for a scholarship or volunteer opportunity. Applicants who do not receive a scholarship but
wish to attend the conference must submit a regular registration form with payment.
