         S. 170th Street FIRE STATION REPLACEMENT

Proposed Project
The replacement design calls for increasing the size of this station to accommodate the Fire
Department's Headquarters, Emergency Coordinations Center, a new ladder truck and the
existing Engine Company. Moving the department's headquarters and emergency coordination
center to a more centralized location will allow more member participation and a higher quality of
training.

The new building will meet earthquake stability codes and also place the living and working
quarters for firefighters on the ground level of the building; increasing safety and decreasing
response times.

With the new station design drive-through bays will allow safer maneuvering of the apparatus
eliminating the noise of backup beepers and reducing maintenance costs and effective life span of
the vehicles. With a ladder truck at Station 46 the department will be more effective in an
apartment or structure fire and be better equipped to rescue victims from upper stories, saving
lives and property.

Limitations of the Existing Station
Station 46 was constructed in 1947 and is 6,428 square feet on a site less than ½ acre, without
room to expand and requiring trucks to be backed in. The current station is not up to current
building codes for an earthquake and currently houses the firefighter living quarters on the second
story increasing the risks of firefighter injuries as well as increasing response times.

Station 46 currently houses one fire truck, a reserve aid car and a mobile fueling truck with three
firefighters on duty everyday. The station also currently functions as the centralized training
facility for the department allowing more centralized department training, meeting and other joint
activities.

Estimated Cost for Replacement

The estimated cost of this project is $4,900,000 and is being funded by the City Council out of
existing funds the City has saved. This amount includes the cost of construction, interim
facilities, and purchase of necessary property to enlarge the footprint of the Station.

Replacement Schedule

While the Station is being constructed, a temporary facility will house firefighters so there will be
no loss or interruption of emergency services to the community.

Anticipated Start Date for Construction: January 2007
Anticipated completion and Occupancy: January 2008
