Seeking nominations for California Source Reduction Committee
Senate Bill 1916 of 1998 (Chapter 881, Health and Safety Code §25244.15.1)
created the California Source Reduction Committee (Advisory Committee), which
was founded in 1998 and has provided valuable advice that has been essential
to the overall success of California's hazardous waste pollution prevention
efforts. The Advisory Committee is composed of ten public members, with the
executive officers of the various boards, departments, and offices within the
California Environmental Protection Agency as ex officio members.
DTSC is currently seeking nominations for two public member vacancies on the
Advisory Committee: one representing local government; and one representing
publicly owned treatment works.
Committee Goals
DTSC's goals for the Advisory Committee are as follows:
1. Provide guidance and consultation to DTSC in preparation of a two-year
hazardous waste pollution prevention workplan.
2. Evaluate and provide recommendations on the effectiveness of DTSC's
pollution prevention program, including program activities, funding priorities,
measurement, and approach.
3. Recommend legislative changes, if needed.
Committee Member Responsibilities
For the coming planning cycle, we are asking our committee members to:
Attend two or three P2 Advisory Committee meetings each year and
participate in several Advisory Committee conference calls. The meetings
typically last an entire day (9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), with the location
typically being in Sacramento. The conference calls are usually about two
hours in duration. Travel expenses will be paid by the State.
Review materials prior to the meetings. Agenda packets are generally
mailed two weeks prior to P2 Advisory Committee meetings.
Work with the other members in a collaborative process.
Represent the interests of their constituency (local government or Publicly-
owned treatment works) via participation in the two-way dialog between
the Advisory Committee and DTSC.
If you have any questions about the P2 Advisory Committee, or DTSC's pollution
prevention program, please feel free to contact Mr. Bill Ryan, Chief of the
Pollution Prevention Branch at (916) 322-5919 or Mr. David Miller, Senior
Hazardous Substances Scientist, OPPTD at (916) 322-2712.
Finally, you can find background information to help you better understand both
our charge under this legislation and DTSC's pollution prevention program, a
roster of committee members, and a copy of the
current (2004-2006) DTSC Pollution Prevention Two-Year Workplan online at:

Thank you for your interest in participating on this valuable advisory group.
