About the UAIS Journal
The UAIS Journal solicits original research contributions addressing the accessibility, usability and
acceptability of Information Society Technologies by anyone, anywhere, at anytime, and through any
media and device. Universal access refers to the systematic effort to proactively apply principles,
methods and tools of universal design, in order to develop Information Society Technologies which
are accessible and usable by all citizens.
The Journal's unique focus is on theoretical, methodological, and empirical research, of both
technological and non-technological nature, that addresses equitable access and active participation of
potentially all citizens in the Information Society.

Aims and scope of this special issue
HCI issues for older people are extremely important in light of the rapidly ageing population in
developed and many developing countries. This demographic change has implications for many areas
of policy and practice, including that of the design of computing and interactive systems. Such
systems are becoming more and more a part of daily life and present valuable opportunities for
supporting people with age-related impairments. However, older and disabled people often find
interactive systems unsuitable or difficult to use, due to differences in experience, abilities and
situations. The resultant HCI challenges have yet to be comprehensively identified and addressed.
Original research contributions are therefore solicited, which focus on HCI issues as they relate to the
older population. The thematic scope of this special issue includes the development of methodologies
and techniques for designing for older people; the development and evaluation of systems and
interaction techniques for this user group; and the discussion of issues surrounding computer access
and usability by older people. Contributions should discuss how the work is of relevance to universal
access in a wider sense, as well as to older people in particular.
This special issue is based, in particular, on a workshop entitled "HCI, the Web and the Older
Population", held at the British HCI conference 2006 in London in September 2006.
Important dates
    · Deadline for submission of papers: December 31, 2006
    · Notification of acceptance: February 19, 2007
    · Deadline for submission of camera-ready version of accepted papers: March 19, 2007
    · Expected publication date of the special issue: late spring, 2007.
This tight timetable allows the publication of the special issue as soon as possible after the workshop
on which it is based.
Authors should submit their manuscripts electronically as PDF files to Suzette Keith (e-mail:
S.Keith@mdx.ac.uk), one of the Guest Editors of the special issue.

Manuscript preparation
Please refer to the "Instructions to authors" section on the Website of the UAIS Journal.
Long Papers should be between 20 and 30 pages long, including figures, when formatted in Word with
default margins and 12pt text.
Shorter manuscripts (less than 20 pages), can also be submitted as Short Papers.

Reviewing process
All papers will be peer reviewed by three reviewers, experts in the field, appointed by the Guest
Editors of the issue in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal.

Submission of an article implies that:
