The Deployable Virtual Training Environment
(DVTE) is a laptop-based system that trains
Marines from the individual- to the battalion
staff-level by using a simulation network with
reconfigurable workstations capable of
delivering a vast range of training scenarios.
DVTE has both the combined arms network of
simulations as well as a series of independent
tactical decision-making simulations that run on
the same hardware platform.
The combined arms network can simulate many
Marine Corps roles (such as forward observer,
forward air controller, and fire support team
leader) and platforms (such as the AAV, M1
tank, LAV, MTVR, AH-1 Cobra Helicopter, and
AV-8B Harrier). In addition, DVTE can interface with tactical command and control equipment such as AFATDS, PFED, and
TLDHS to facilitate training of a variety of fire support platforms using Marine Corps tactical gear. DVTE responds to the
need for a flexible and deployable system that provides combined arms, Marine air-ground task force, and naval integration
training.
Tactical decision-making simulations are independent special purpose simulations included with DVTE. Individuals, fire
teams, squads, and platoons can train for tasks such as patrolling, convoy training, conducting an ambush, and sweeping for
improvised explosive devices. Examples of these simulations include: a Tactical Iraqi program that will allow Marines to train
for mission-specific language and cultural situations during predeployment workups in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom;
and Virtual Battlefield System 2, a fully interactive, three-dimensional training system that provides a premium synthetic
environment suitable for a wide range of military training and experimentation purposes. Developed by Bohemia Interactive,
this program offers both virtual and constructive interfaces onto high-fidelity worlds of unparalleled realism.
Hardware
A DVTE suite is made up of 33 laptops and peripherals all packaged in deployable cases. It includes all gear necessary to
establish a complete virtual training environment in under an hour.
Predeployment Training Program
DVTE capabilities and scenarios are being developed specifically to address the gaps and reinforce home station training for
blocks I and II as well as reinforce the training done at the Mojave Viper facility at Twenty-Nine Palms in California. These
training areas include: combined arms, motorized operations, cultural training, entry control point/vehicle control point,
defeating improvised explosive devices, enduring combat actions, and military operations in urban terrain.
Fielding Plan
The current plan for DVTE fielding is down to the regimental and Marine expeditionary unit level. These suites will be
maintained at the regimental level for use by subordinate units. Support for the training and hardware for DVTE will be
accomplished locally at each Marine expeditionary force (MEF) by a DVTE team from the MEF simulations center.
DVTE suites already have been fielded to all MEF simulations centers, and six suites have been sent to II MEF.
