SUPERIOR COURT OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Judge Brook Hedge was appointed to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia
in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush. She has served in the Civil, Criminal and Family
components of the Court, as well as, in the Domestic Violence Unit as Presiding Judge of
the Unit.
Judge Hedge, a New York native, has lived on both the east and west coasts. She
attended public primary and secondary schools, and received her Bachelor of Arts from the
University of California at Santa Barbara in 1970. Following graduation, Judge Hedge
moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights
Under Law until 1971. Judge Hedge received her law degree from Catholic University in
1974, and then clerked for the late Honorable June L. Green of the United States District
Court for the District of Columbia.
From 1977 until her appointment to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia,
Judge Hedge pursued her legal career at the United States Department of Justice. She began
as a trial attorney in what evolved into the Federal Program Branch of the Civil Division,
representing the interests of the United States in its capacity as both plaintiff and defendant.
In 1979, she became an Assistant Director in the Branch, specializing in cases involving law
enforcement, national security, and foreign policy. Two years later, she became an Acting
Director in the Branch and was inducted into the Senior Executive Service in May 1982. As
a Branch Director, she supervised over 80 trial attorneys in litigation involving employment
policies and decisions, education, health and human services matters, and banking litigation,
as well as in suits involving the White House and the Judicial and Legislative Branch of
government. Among the awards she received during her tenure with the Department was
the Attorney General's second highest award, the Distinguished Service Award.
Judge Hedge currently Chairs the Court Technology Committee, Co-Chairs the
CJCC Interagency Technology Advisory Committee with Chief Judge Rufus King and
Co-Chairs the IJIS Management Implementation Committee with the Clerk of the Court.
She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Council for Court Excellence.
Previously, she served on the Board of Directors of the Frederick B. Abramson Foundation
and the Women's Bar Association Foundation.
