The Joint ABS/BAM Development Programme for
Directors of Research, 2008
2008 will see the fifth year of the Directors of Research Development Programme
(DPDOR): a joint initiative between the British Academy of Management and the
Association of Business Schools (ABS). It is a programme designed for those already in
post and for those working towards the position within their institution.

Why is the programme important and why now?
The programme is particularly relevant at a time when business and management schools
throughout the UK are focused on enhancing their teaching and research reputation within
the community, improving the quality of research and strengthening the link to practice, as
well as ensuring sustainability in the medium term by securing funding from a diverse
range of sources. These objectives result in an expanding remit and demanding
environment for those in the role of Director of Research.

What will the programme cover?
Delegates on the programme will consider the mission of their business/management
school and consider how research fits into this mission. The six sessions included in the
programme will look at issues such as:

           · assessing and developing a research strategy
           · devising research structures and management processes
           · evaluating various research approaches
           · developing faculty including leading, mentoring and coaching
           · performance measuring research
           · strategising the future of business/management schools and their role in a
               knowledge economy
           · obtaining and managing funding for research
           · research training and doctoral programmes
           · clarifying the issues for pre and post '92 universities

In addressing this agenda the programme will provide delegates with stimulating inputs
from experienced research managers, along with the opportunity to develop their own
ideas and to learn with their peers by building a supportive network.
How will the programme work?

Facilitation
The programme will be facilitated by Richard Thorpe, Professor of Management
Development at Leeds University Business School and Deputy Director of the Keyworth
Institute, and will engage expert input from a range of other senior figures.

Richard has a range of research interests which include: performance, remuneration, small
business and entrepreneurship, management learning and development, and leadership.

He has sought to develop these interests at all the institutions in which he has worked. His
early industrial experience informed the way his ethos has developed. Common themes
are: a strong commitment to process methodologies and a focus on action in all it's forms;
an interest in and commitment to the development of doctoral students and the
development of capacity within the sector; a commitment to collaborative working on
projects of mutual interest.

Within the Management and Business community, Richard has undertaken a number of
national roles:

   · He is currently the President of the British Academy of Management (BAM) and
facilitated the first Directors of Research Development Programme. Previously he
undertook the roles of deputy chair, vice-chair, chair and secretary.
   · A past member of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Training
and Development Board, he chaired the studentship panels, the RDI panel and the
research recognition panel. He has also sat on a sub-committee of the grants
board, assessing the applicants for the first grants scheme.
   · As an accreditor for the Association of MBA's (AMBA) and as a panel member for
the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) accreditation
       service EQUIS.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises six 24 hour, small group sessions based in London (unless
specified) spread throughout the year. The six sessions typically will include
presentations, plenaries, discussion and feedback within a maximum cohort of 14 people.
The programme will be highly participative in style, encouraging the sharing and
comparing of good practice as well as the identification of key challenges for the future.
Discussions will take place under Chatham House rules.

Each session will have a coherent theme and will begin with an opportunity for participants
to network and update on their strategies and activities. All sessions will then have expert
input on research strategy within the context of an overall school mission as well as
specific topics requiring detailed understanding. All of these inputs will stimulate
discussion and provoke ideas for implementation.
The sessions begin with lunch on day 1 and closing after lunch on day 2. The cost
includes refreshments, dinner, overnight accommodation and breakfast for all sessions.
An indicative structure for sessions is shown below, however dates indicated are fixed.

Testimonials from 2006 Cohort:

This programme is a must for anyone tasked with the management and development of
Research in UK Business Schools. The speakers and other guests operate at the highest
levels in the UK research environment and this quality input facilitates the most lively and
illuminating of debates. A real learning experience.
Dr Peter Urwin, Director, Centre for Employment Research, Westminster Business
School

This is an excellent programme which advanced my research management skills,
perspectives and thought processes in working within modern business education in
today's world. The colleagues on the course were first rate and always challenging in
discussions. A great programme and highly recommended.
Ben Nowman, Professor of Finance at Westminster Business School, 2006 Cohort

The Development Programme for Directors of Research provided me with an excellent
grounding in the principles of research management, training and development. With
fellow participants, the course allowed me to focus on many functions of a Director of
Research within the context of my own institution and the wider business and
management community. The blend of guest speakers from universities, government and
professional bodies provided an increased understanding of the current and future
research and training agendas in the UK and Europe. Overall, I found the course a
stimulating and valuable experience.
Professor John O.S. Wilson, Management School, University of St Andrews
