Project description and innovation
2.1 What is the objective of your project?
Explain what you are you aiming to achieve?
2.2 How will you set about meeting your project objective?
This should take the form of a succinct overview of the approach you are planning to
take.
Be specific, tell us WHAT you are going to do and WHO is going to do the work.
2.3 Evidence of technical feasibility
Briefly describe the technical / operational principles underpinning your project and
explain how your project fits into this broader context
If previous work has directly contributed to this proposal, describe the main findings.
If your project depends on specific assumptions what are they? Justify why you think
they are reasonable!
2.4 How is your project innovative?
Explain how your project is distinctive from what has been done before, either by
yourselves or by others. The innovative element may be either an improved technology
design or in the application of a technology or process.

2.5 Will the innovation be protected? If so how?
What intellectual property will the work generate? (If defensible intellectual property
rights are not being generated, this should be stated).
Who will own this intellectual property?
How will this be protected and exploited?
List any relevant patent titles and numbers on which the project will rely.
2.6 Identify main competitors and competing technologies
What technologies, goods or services will be created or displaced, if the project is
successful, should be clearly stated. In addition known potential competitors in these
areas should be described. If not stated earlier the size of the target market should be
made clear (i.e. indicate the replication potential for the product).
2.7 Graphic

Potential for Carbon Dioxide emission savings
3.1 Describe how your project will reduce emissions of Carbon Dioxide in the UK.
Explain how undertaking the proposed project will directly and/or indirectly lead to
reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.
3.2 As far as is practicable estimate the scale of carbon dioxide emissions reductions in the UK
attributable to this proposed project.
This estimate should be based on the potential savings associated with one
installation/application together with an estimate of how many installations/applications
there are likely to be. Potential savings of other greenhouse gases should be converted
into carbon dioxide equivalents.
Outputs / Benefits
4.1 Once your project is completed, what will it have produced?
What will you have at the end of the project that you don't have now?
4.2 If your project is successful, what will your next steps be?
Convince us that your project will have a tangible impact. How will the work be
exploited, and by whom? If commercialising/exploiting the project requires the
involvement of companies and organisations outside the consortium how will you
identify and engage with them?
4.3 Describe who else might benefit from your work, and how you will engage them? / What is
the market need?
If you are developing a new product who will buy it, and why?
If you are producing a report, who will read it, and why?
If you are demonstrating a new technology, who are you demonstrating it to, and why?
Are there other people who would benefit from knowing the results of your project? Are
you planning to communicate the results to them? If so how?
4.4 How will you (and your project partners) benefit from carrying out this project?
We expect you to benefit from this project, what we are looking for, is that the benefit
to you will extend beyond the life of the project itself.
Describe what benefit you and your project partners will gain from doing this work
Outline why do you want to do this project?
Outline project plan and funding
5.1 Outline project plan
Carbon Trust, ARP Specimen application form updated Jan-06
This form is for reference only - All applications must be made online
The project plan should be presented in tabular form. Each task (work item) needs to
reach a tangible outcome or specific milestone. The milestones and outcomes are
expected to show a logical approach that is practical and capable of delivering the
project objective set out above. At this stage the work should be described in terms of
5 - 7 tasks.

5.2 Estimated Cost Breakdown by Task/Work Item
Planned expenditure patterns over the life of the project should be presented below.
Costs should be shown for each of the tasks shown above, and then the total cost should
be broken down into the identified cost categories.

5.4 Proposed project funding and associated sources
The full project finance package needs to be explicit and all contributions to the
project must be disclosed. In completing the table the `type' column should be cash,
in-kind or grant and the status should be `Applied for', `In discussion', `Contingent (on
completion of the full finance package' or `Agreed'.
All contributions to the project must be fair, honestly priced and auditable. We expect
to see each collaborator making a financial contribution of some form to the project.
There are restrictions on the amount of public money that a project can receive, please
see the funding and eligibility guidelines for further details.

6.1 Who are the lead and partner organisations and where are they based?
Details of each consortium members must be provided. In completing the table include
the UK location of each organisation, if the organisation is outside the UK the country of
registration must be stated. The type of organisation can be `SME' `Large Company',
`Academic', `Trade Body' or `Other'.

6.2 Details of subcontractors:
If you are planning to use subcontractors their roles should be elaborated below, along
with an indication as to how these roles will be filled (e.g. competitive tender). You
should explain why subcontracting is the right approach for the completion of the work
in question.
6.3 Relevant experience, competence and role in the consortium
This should be completed for all members of the consortium. Taken as a whole this
section should demonstrate that the consortium has available to it the skills required to
bring the project to a successful conclusion. These descriptions should not exceed 100
words for the lead applicant and 50 words for each collaborating organisation.
Risk identification and management
7.1 Describe any risks & adverse effects associated with your project
All activities have inherent risks. In assessing which proposals should be supported we are
looking for evidence that the most significant risks have been recognised by the applicants,
Carbon Trust, ARP Specimen application form updated Jan-06
This form is for reference only - All applications must be made online
and as far as possible mitigation measures put in place. In analysing risk it is sometimes
useful to look at groups under the following headings:
· Technical risk including failure to deliver, knock-on impacts where completion
depends on success in early stages of project, where developments overtake the
original plan, etc.
· Commercial risk this could involve cost overruns, new or cheaper competitors
emerging, changing fuel prices, market risks etc.
· Environmental risk This could include greater than predicted emissions etc,
changes in pollution control, etc.
· Social/political risk this could include changes in market drivers and conditions,
changes in the regulatory framework, etc.
7.2 How will these risks be managed & adverse effects mitigated?
· How will the above risks be managed? The text here could be generic in nature or
address specific (classes of) risks identified above. The Carbon Trust is not looking
for all risk to be removed from the work, but it does want to see evidence of plans/
actions that would minimise their potential impact.
Benefit to the UK economy
8.1 How will your project benefit the UK?
This should include how economic benefits will be delivered to the UK economy. The
benefits could be direct in terms of jobs or indirect in terms of reducing barriers to
technology exploitation/uptake.
Previous applications
9.1 List any previous energy efficiency, renewable energy or other low carbon R&D project
applications
All applications made by the lead applicant to the Carbon Trust in the past 2 years
should be specified. In addition applications to other funders such as DTI, Defra and the
Research Councils should be listed under `Source'. Status should indicate if it is `Live
Project', `Under Consideration', or `Rejected'. The Carbon Trust reserves the right to
discuss proposals it receives with public sector funding bodies.
