British Gansey Techniques with Beth Brown-Reinsel
ALL DAY                 See supplies needed below                         No materials fee.
Students will learn how to construct a Gansey, a sweater form prevalent in the 19th
century and early part of the 20th century among the fishermen of the British Isles. A
small scale sweater will be knitted using traditional construction techniques including the
classic Channel Island Cast-on, split welts, seam stitches, traditional knit/purl patterns,
the underarm gusset, shoulder straps with perpendicular joining and picked up sleeves.
Alternative methods to these techniques will also be explored.
Supplies needed: One set of four 7" long (shorter is ok) dp needles, size 5
                      One set of four or five 7" long (shorter is ok) dp needles, size 7
                      3 oz. plain-textured, solid, light colored worsted weight yarn.
          optional: 11 ½" or 12" circular needle size 7, st markers, waste yarn, sticky
notes or magnetic board to aid in reading the chart. (If you like using the magic loop or 2
circulars, bring the appropriate needle.)
Intermediate Level (must be proficient with dp needles)

Beginning Spinning with Barbara Tonnissen
10am-1pm                                                                  Materials fee $10
This course is designed for a very beginning spinner or someone who has never spun
before. Students will learn the basics of spinning wool on a wheel, care of the spinning
wheel and will leave with a skein of 2ply wool. We will discuss spinning yarn for
specific projects, different fibers used in spinning and different breeds of sheep and the
wool they produce.
No experience necessary.

Hand Spinning with a Drop Spindle with Jim Holzchuh
10am-1pm                                                                Materials fee $35
This course will teach you how to select and use a drop spindle for hand spinning and
plying yarn. We will start with the "Park and Draft" method and progress into free
spinning. Plying single ply yarn into multiple plies will also be discussed. Drop spindles
and a half pound of roving (Border Leicester/Romney cross wool) from Paradise Bay
Farm will be available for purchase.
No experience necessary.

Novelty Spinning with Barbara Tonnissen
1:30-4pm                                                               Materials fee $15
This course is designed for the spinner who is ready to branch out and learn new
techniques and experiment with adding embellishments to their yarns. We will learn
Navajo plying, how to spin a consistent single ply yarn, adding mohair locks or chicken
feathers to your yarn and other novelty yarns. This class lets your imagination soar with
wild possibilities.
Students need to be comfortable with basic spinning techniques
and bring their own wheels.
